SHYEBASE X JINHAN CRAFT

MOON JAR COLLECTION

2026 [Contained Void]

Collaboration with Jinhan projects a series of sculptural object forms that create space within space, offering structures of support and embrace. It marks a shift in Shyebase’s ongoing exploration of instinctive tension toward precision and restraint. This project focuses on refinement, allowing ceramic texture, curvature and form to take precedence over overt complexity.

Jinhan’s craft, shaped by growing up around clay, has always been rooted in what is most familiar and grounding. His practice draws from traditional Korean ceramics, with a particular focus on the curvature and the subtle hues that emerge through firing. He approaches each piece as a way of tracing the gestures of past artisans, engaging deeply with inherited processes. He works with a level of precision beyond necessity yet this rigor allows him to achieve exceptionally clean, controlled curves.

Moon jars are completed by separately forming the upper and lower hemispheres and joining them together, due to the size limitations of the kiln. While they appear refined and flawless on the surface, the process naturally prevents perfect symmetry, resulting in subtle distortions or slight irregularities. At first glance, they seem to embody the systematic and modernist aesthetics of contemporary society yet upon closer observation, they reveal naturalness and organic imperfection. This sense closely resonates with SHYEBASE’s ongoing exploration of contradiction, as well as its appreciation for craftsmanship and material sensitivity.
